Hey all, In the middle of preparation for my PhD qualifying exam, and my mac is gone wild. *Almost all programs* report 'The application _ quit unexpectedly.' Ignore, Report, Relaunch. This error message is pretty common, but I haven't found a post of someone who is having this problem affecting almost all applications.

Programs affected: System Preferences, TextEdit, Preview, iCal, Terminal, Matlab, others. Programs not affected: Papers (3rd party academic document manager), Microsoft Word, Finder. Speculation: I was using matlab to generate plots when this all happened.
I tried to export an image from matlab as a pdf, and when I tried to view the newly created pdf in Preview it gave me the first 'application quit unexpectedly'. I noticed over the next couple of hours that many other programs were reporting the same thing. Your help would be immensely appreciated, qualifying exam in a week! Thanks, Mac OS X (10.5.8) Posted on Jun 1, 2010 10:22 PM. See if these help: This a sign that your system may be corrupted or some cache files are seriously corrupted. See the following re: caches: Delete caches to resolve some problems: Boot into.
After startup is completed you will be in command line mode and should see a prompt with a cursor positioned after it. At the prompt enter the following then press RETURN after each commandline: /sbin/fsck -fy If you receive a message that says ' *** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***' then re-run the command until you receive a message that says '** The volume (name ofvolume) appears to be OK.' If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way. If you were successful then enter: /sbin/mount -uw / rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/* rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext rm -rf /Library/Caches/* reboot I suggest you print out the above to be sure you do not make any errors when entering the commands.
When in single-user mode you have 'root' access, so it's important that you not make any mistakes. Jun 1, 2010 11:02 PM.
I was able to do what you said, and it did not work. Specifically, the check disc function reported the 'FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED' message on the first run, but the second run cleared 'OK'. Upon rebooting, the system still suffered from the 'application has unexpectedly quit' problem for all programs listed above. From other posts, I also tried deleting the appropriate preference files (textedit, preview) and restarting. This did not work. Finally, I tried logging in as a different user, and this also did not work. Jun 2, 2010 12:28 PM.
I'm assuming from what you tried that the only resolution is to reinstall OS X. You should be able to do the following: How to Perform an An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options.
The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install. Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.' S ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. Status of the hard drive.
If it does not say 'Verified' then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is 'Verified' then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix.
In that case use and/or to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option.
You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it.
You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. Jun 2, 2010 12:39 PM.
I read your instructions in their entirety. It's installing a new OS parallel to my current installation, such that I can grab files from my old install.
But--and correct me if I'm wrong here--I would not be able to run programs from the old install. Do I understand correctly? I absolutely need to be able to run matlab, papers, and a variety of other programs as re-installation / registration of all of these in a timely manner is not possible. Thanks for reposting the links, I will try some of the things there.
I did not mean to come off unappreciative and I am absolutely reading every word of your posts as I'm out of other options. Jun 2, 2010 2:03 PM. Removing all the preferences caused the few remaining programs that were working to become un-registered, while not fixing the programs that weren't working. I can't get into the font management, it also gives me the 'this application has unexpectedly quit' message.
Looks like I already did the disc utility repair thing as per your post before. I haven't recently updated the OS to any of the versions indicated in your first link's post, though the symptom 'Only Apple applications affected' describes the problem perfectly. Can't create a new administrator / user since that involves getting into 'system preferences', which quits unexpectedly along with everything else. However, I indicated before that these problems also occur when logged into other user accounts. Question: if I store a copy of the preference files and copy them to a clean install, will that restore registration to my various programs? That would go a long way toward making a reinstall a feasible option. Jun 2, 2010 2:40 PM.
I have the error message 'Photoshop CS2 quit unexpectedly' EVERY day, several times. It happens with Tiger and Snow Leopard. It also happens with Photoshop CS3 and CS4. And it happens on all of my machines: Mac Mini, 17' MacBook Pro and MacPro. Very distracting. It also happens with native Apple programs like Mail and Safari. We obviously have to live with that.
It seems to be a glitch in the Apple OS and has nothing to do with the application programs. I also run Photoshop on a very cheap Windows XP machine. Zero problems. It would be nice to get an OS that runs smoothly. Jul 9, 2010 5:14 PM. Apple Footer This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only.
